Highly Skilled Migrant Visa
The Highly Skilled Migrant visa is a Dutch residence permit aimed at attracting highly skilled workers from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland. This program targets talented professionals who can contribute to the Dutch economy and help fill labor shortages in key sectors, such as technology, engineering, and healthcare.
What are the key requirements?
To be eligible for the Highly Skilled Migrant visa, the applicant must have an employment contract with an approved sponsor in the Netherlands. An approved sponsor is an employer who has been authorized by the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND) to employ Highly Skilled Migrants. (See link: what is an approved sponsor?) It is important that the employer meets the specific conditions that apply to this visa.
Additionally, there are strict salary requirements that depend on the age, position, and sector of the employee. The salary must meet the established minimum standards, which can be adjusted annually, and must be in line with market rates. This means the salary should be in accordance with what is common for the specific role and industry in the Netherlands.
How does the application process work?
The employer submits the application on behalf of the Highly Skilled Migrant, including all necessary documents, such as the employment contract and pay slips. Depending on the nationality of the knowledge migrant, the employer may also need to apply for a provisional residence permit (MVV). Once all documents have been submitted, the IND will typically make a decision on the application within 90 days. In some cases, this period can be extended if more time is needed to gather additional information.
What is the duration of the Highly Skilled Migrant visa?
The visa is initially granted for a period of up to 5 years, depending on the duration of the employment contract. If the employment contract is extended, the visa can also be extended, as long as the employee remains employed by the approved sponsor.
